Night Mode in a 3D Configurator: Show Your Product After Dark

In short: Night mode in a 3D configurator shows the configured product after dark, with its lighting, so buyers can picture how they'll actually use it; at EQUIBOX it was also exaggerated on purpose so it reads on a tablet in a sunny show booth.

Night mode in a 3D configurator switches the scene from day to night and shows the product with its lights on: the house glowing from inside with the porch lit, the metal building at night out in the country, the horse barn after dark. All three Estructuras 3D configurators have it, behind the Night view button. It looks like a cosmetic extra. It isn't: it shows a part of real-life use that daylight hides.

Why show your product at night

Nobody uses their home only at 3 p.m. The porch gets used at night, in summer, with friends. Same with a backyard patio or garden room. A barn where cows get milked, trucks get loaded or equipment gets fixed is in use before sunrise. A horse barn gets a walk-through at night to check on the horses.

When a configurator only shows daytime, the buyer decides with half the picture. Night mode fills in the rest, and it tends to trigger questions your sales rep will love:

  • "How many lights come with the porch?"
  • "Can we add lighting under the overhang?"
  • "Do the windows let in enough light, or should we add one?"

Each of those questions is a sales conversation, and sometimes an add-on.

What you see in each configurator

In the home, night is where it really shines. With interior lighting on, you see the house from the sidewalk with the windows lit, the porch and pool after dark, and which rooms face the street. For a family, it's the image closest to "coming home." Try it in the prefab home configurator.

In the metal building, the farm scene turns to night. It shows the outline of the structure, the door, and how the building sits against the countryside. It's in the metal building configurator.

In the horse barn, the scene with horses has a night version too, showing the stalls and the canopy as the sun goes down. Try it in the horse stable configurator.

It also works with everything else: you can walk through the product at night at eye level (more in walking through a 3D configurator) or download a night image to send by text.

EQUIBOX and the sunny show booth

There's one project where night mode solved a problem that had nothing to do with nighttime. EQUIBOX, the horse stall and stable manufacturer in Berazategui, Argentina, that I built the quoting tool for, sells a lot at agricultural shows. At those shows, the booth is outdoors or under a tent, in full sun.

An iPad in the sun is hard to read. The soft contrast of a "realistic" night scene just disappears. So in the EQUIBOX tool, night mode is exaggerated on purpose, with a much stronger effect, so the customer standing next to the rep at noon can actually see the effect on screen. It's not a design mistake. It's a decision made for where the tool gets used.

I cover it in more detail in EQUIBOX design decisions, along with the other choices that came from selling out in the country: the iPad, no signal, and a PDF that shows exactly what was quoted.

Why it helps you sell

Three pretty concrete reasons:

  1. It makes people want it. A home with a lit porch at night is the picture buyers already have in their heads before they buy. Showing it isn't a trick. It's showing them what they'll get.
  2. It opens up add-ons. Exterior lighting, more windows, an overhang over the walk door. They come up on their own once the buyer sees the night view.
  3. It stands out at shows. Next to a booth full of brochures, a screen where the product goes from day to night with one tap gets attention. I wrote about that in selling at agricultural shows.

Can it be tuned for my product?

Yes. In a custom build, the night lighting is designed with the product: where the lights go, what gets lit, how much contrast makes sense based on where it'll be shown (a website people browse on their phone at night, a tablet in a sunny booth). If you build patios, pergolas or carports, night might be your best selling point. The closest thing to try today is the home configurator.

I'm Facundo Campo, and I build 3D configurators and quoting tools for manufacturers, working remotely from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Frequently asked questions

Do all three configurators have night mode?

Yes. Metal buildings, prefab homes and horse stables all have the Night view button, and it works on phones and tablets too.

Why does EQUIBOX's night mode look so strong?

Because it's used in booths at agricultural shows, in the sun. The effect was pushed on purpose so the effect is visible on an iPad in broad daylight.

Can I download a night image?

Yes. With night view on, you can download the image or share the configuration link so someone else can open it.

Does night mode show what the real lighting will be like?

It's a visual aid to help people decide, not a lighting calculation. The actual electrical layout is up to the manufacturer or a professional.

How Long Does a 3D Configurator Take? What Drives the Timeline

The time it takes to build a 3D configurator depends on how many rules the product has, whether prices are shown or kept internal, how organized the manufacturer's information is, and how quickly the manufacturer tests and approves each delivery.

After a 3D configurator goes live, the manufacturer updates its own prices from a price table it manages, and only needs the developer for new building rules, new products and new features that come up with use.
