Garage, Workshop and Barndominium 3D Configurator for US Builders
By Facundo Campo, 3D quoting tool developer
In short: A garage, workshop and barndominium 3D configurator lets buyers set the size, doors, wall height and living space, and walk through it in 3D, so the builder gets inquiries where both the building and how it'll be used are already clear.
A garage and workshop 3D configurator is a web tool where your buyer designs their steel garage, shop or barndominium by picking the size, doors, wall height, finishes and, if needed, the living space, and sees it in 3D inside and out. These buyers have one thing in common: they know exactly what it's for, and what they care about most is whether their stuff will fit.
A buyer who measures everything
Someone shopping for a metal garage or a shop isn't the farmer storing a combine or the homeowner adding a backyard shed. They've got a specific use in mind:
- Two cars and a workbench.
- An RV, or a boat on its trailer.
- A car lift, which sets the clear height.
- A woodworking or welding shop with machines that need room around them.
So they ask in numbers: "Will a 30 × 40 with 14 ft walls fit my RV? Can I get a 12 × 14 door? What if I add a mezzanine over the bench?" With a form, every answer is another email. In 3D, they just see it.
What a garage or shop buyer decides
The options are familiar, but they combine in a lot of ways:
- Size: the classic 24 × 30, 30 × 40 or 40 × 60 ft.
- Wall height and roof pitch, which decide what fits inside.
- Big doors: how many, how wide and tall, on which wall. Sliding, roll-up or sectional.
- Walk doors and windows, which can't land where a big door goes.
- A lean-to on one side for the mower or firewood.
- Finishes: panel colors, a masonry base or brick front, trim.
Barndominiums: a shop and a home under one roof
A barndominium is a steel or post-frame building with a home inside, often with the shop or garage at one end and the living space at the other. It mixes two kinds of logic: the structure (spans, frames, doors) and the house (rooms, bathrooms, kitchen, interior finishes).
For a builder that sells them, quoting is twice as hard, and the typical inquiry is the most open-ended of all: "I want a 40 × 60 barndo with three bedrooms and a big shop." A configurator that brings both halves together keeps that conversation organized from the start. If you build barndos post-frame, the structure works like the one in my pole barn 3D configurator article.
What you can try today
My site has two configurators that, together, cover both halves:
- The metal building configurator: width, length, height, roof pitch, gable or single-slope roof, truss or solid-web frames, wall options, colored metal finishes, frame color, exposed brick with pilasters, a side lean-to with its own width and drop, a sliding door you size and can open, walk doors and windows. Walk mode lets you move around inside at eye level, which is exactly what a shop buyer wants: stand in there and see how much room is left.
- The prefab home configurator, with a floor plan editor to drag and resize rooms, doors, windows, furniture and a second floor with stairs.
Neither one is an American garage configurator as is, and neither shows prices. A garage, shop or barndominium configurator gets built as custom work on the same engine, with your sizes, your doors and your finishes. If you're wondering why nobody has to model every variation by hand, I explain it in parametric rendering.
What you get as the builder
- Inquiries that already tell you the use. If a buyer set up a 30 × 40 with a 12 × 14 door and tall walls, your rep knows there's an RV or a lift involved.
- Fewer door mistakes. The configurator won't let anyone put a door where it doesn't fit or stack a window on top of another opening. More in costly quoting mistakes.
- Buyers see the clear height. Walking through it answers the question you hear most.
- A link they can share. They send it to their spouse or business partner and come back with a decision.
Permits, setbacks and wind and snow loads change by state and county. The configurator can stick to the limits you set, but those always get checked by a local professional.
Working with a developer in Argentina
I'm Facundo Campo, a software developer based in Quilmes, Buenos Aires. I work remotely, in English and Spanish, and since Argentina is on UTC−3 my day overlaps almost entirely with the US. You send your catalog, standard sizes, the doors you offer and a few sample quotes; we talk on video calls, and every step comes to you as a link to try. The configurator runs in English, in feet, in dollars.
If you build garages, shops or barndominiums, message me on WhatsApp at +54 9 11 6193-3176 or email facundocampo100@gmail.com. I answer in English and Spanish. You can also read about custom 3D quoting software or try the configurators.
Frequently asked questions
Can buyers add several doors on different walls?
Yes, as custom work. The public configurator has one sliding door with adjustable width and height that opens; adding several, of different types and on different walls, is part of your product's rules.
Can the garage be combined with living space?
That can be built. The engine already handles steel buildings and homes with a floor plan editor, in two separate configurators; a barndominium puts them together in one.
Can buyers check whether their RV fits?
They can walk through the building at eye level and see the door and wall heights. Showing a reference vehicle inside can be added in the custom build.
Do buyers need to install anything?
No. It opens from a link in the browser, on a computer, tablet or phone, and the configuration is shared with another link.
