Gate and Garage Door 3D Configurator for Made-to-Measure Manufacturers

In short: A gate and door 3D configurator is a web tool where a customer or sales rep picks the opening type (up-and-over, sliding or swing), enters the opening size, chooses cladding, color and opener, sees it in 3D, and the manufacturer gets an inquiry with everything defined.

A gate and garage door 3D configurator is a web tool where the buyer picks the opening type —up-and-over, sliding or swing—, enters the size of the opening, chooses the cladding, the color and whether it gets an opener, and sees the result in 3D while deciding. The manufacturer gets an inquiry with all of that already settled and can quote it without ten rounds of back-and-forth messages.

Why gates are hard to sell over chat

A gate looks like a simple product. It isn't. Every opening is different, every house front is different, and the buyer almost never knows what to measure. The typical inquiry reads: "Hi, how much for a garage gate?" No dimensions, no idea whether it swings in or out, no idea whether there's room on the side for it to slide.

So the questions start. Width and height of the opening. Whether there's a header. Whether the driveway slopes. Plain steel, solid infill or see-through. Opener or not. Every question is one more message, and every message is a chance for the customer to get tired and ask somebody else.

A configurator puts that conversation in order: the questions are on the screen, in the right sequence, and every answer changes what you see. The customer who didn't know what a double swing gate was gets it the moment they watch it open.

What the customer chooses

A good gate configurator follows the same order the buyer decides in:

  1. Opening type. Up-and-over (one panel that tilts up), sliding (runs on a track to the side) or swing (one or two leaves). Each comes with limits: a sliding gate needs side clearance, a swing gate needs room for the leaves to swing.
  2. Opening size. Width and height. The system checks what can actually be built and flags when a size needs extra bracing or a heavier section.
  3. Cladding. Flat steel sheet, corrugated sheet, horizontal timber slats, expanded metal, vertical bars, or a mix with a see-through top. Each shows with its own texture.
  4. Color and finish. Frame and infill colors, seen in 3D instead of on a tiny sample chip.
  5. Pedestrian door and hardware. A built-in walk-through door, lock, handles.
  6. Opener. Manual or automated, and which kind depending on the opening type.

What makes the difference is that every choice shows up immediately. A 3 × 2.2 m (about 10 × 7 ft) gate with horizontal slats and a walk-through door on the left stops being a description and becomes a picture the customer can send to their partner.

The rules the configurator has to know

This is where the real work is. A gate shop runs on rules the owner applies without thinking: how wide a given tube section can go, when an up-and-over door needs bigger springs or counterweights, which opener fits which leaf weight, how much side clearance a 4 m (13 ft) sliding gate needs.

Those rules go into the configurator once, and from then on they're applied the same way every time. A new sales rep can't offer a 5 m up-and-over door with a small opener, because the system won't allow it. I wrote more about this in turning building rules into software and in costly quoting mistakes.

The price comes from those same rules too, not from an average per square foot. A 3 × 2 m gate and a 2 × 3 m gate have the same area but not the same profiles or the same hardware. When the manufacturer updates the price of tube or sheet, they change it in their own price table and every new quote comes out current.

What a gate manufacturer gets out of it

  • Inquiries with dimensions. The lead arrives with type, opening size, cladding and opener chosen, plus an image. Your rep starts from there, not from zero. More on that in qualified leads with a 3D quoting tool.
  • Fewer measuring mistakes. When the tool asks for width and height and explains what to measure, fewer gates show up on site and don't fit.
  • Reps who quote on their own. In the showroom or at the customer's house, the rep builds the gate with the customer right there and shows them the result.
  • The shop gets what was sold. The order reaches production with sizes, type and accessories defined, not as a voice message to decode.
  • Sales in other towns. A customer two hours away can design their gate without driving to your shop.

Seeing the gate on the front of the house

Nobody buys a gate on its own: they buy it for a specific front. So a gate configurator can go beyond the gate by itself and show it in context, a façade wall or a garage, in the color of the house. That can be built custom, depending on what each manufacturer needs.

To get a feel for it today, the metal building configurator already lets you set the width and height of the door and watch it open in 3D, and the prefab home configurator shows a house on its lot with a sidewalk and street. A gate configurator is built custom on that same engine, which generates structures from rules: nobody has to model every combination of size and cladding.

The public configurators don't show prices; pricing is part of each manufacturer's own build. They do have the share link, which is a big deal for gates: the customer builds three options and sends them to the family to decide. I cover that in WhatsApp and 3D quoting.

How the project works

I'm Facundo Campo, a software developer in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. I work remotely, in English and Spanish, over video calls, WhatsApp or email, and I deliver everything as a link you can test in the browser, on your phone too. For a gate configurator, what I need from you is specific:

  • Your catalog of gate types and claddings, with photos.
  • Size rules: minimums, maximums, and when the profile or hardware changes.
  • Which openers you offer and what weight or opening type each one handles.
  • Two or three real quotes, so the tool's math matches yours.

With that I build a first version you test from a link, correct and approve. Each stage is laid out in how a 3D quoting tool is built.

If you make gates or garage doors and want to see your product in 3D, message me on WhatsApp at +54 9 11 6193-3176 or email facundocampo100@gmail.com. I answer in English and Spanish. You can also read about custom 3D quoting software.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 3D configurator work if every gate is made to measure?

Yes, that's what it's for. Even if every opening is different, every gate is built with the same rules: profiles, hardware, cladding and openers. The configurator generates each variant from those rules, with no hand-drawn model for each size.

Does the customer see the gate price on the website?

That's your call. You can show a reference price or keep pricing visible only to your sales reps, the way EQUIBOX does with its horse stalls. The demo configurators on this site don't show prices.

Can installation and the opener go into the quote?

Yes. Installation, the opener, remotes and delivery can be added as options with their own rules, so the quote comes out complete and there are no surprises on site.

Can the gate be shown on a photo of the customer's house?

The public configurators don't do that right now. What can be built custom is a 3D house front with sizes and colors close to the customer's, so they see the gate in context.
