Log Cabin 3D Configurator for Builders of Rental and Family Cabins

Prefab home with wood siding, a single-slope metal roof, a porch and a backyard pool, in the 3D configurator
Wood siding, a single-slope roof and a pool: the yard, porch and fence come from the same configuration.

In short: A log cabin 3D configurator is a web tool where the buyer picks the model, floor plan, loft, porch, windows and wood finishes, walks through the cabin at eye level, and the builder receives an inquiry with everything defined and priced by their own rules.

A log cabin 3D configurator is a web tool where the buyer picks a model, lays out the floor plan, decides on a loft or a second floor, adds a porch or deck, picks windows and wood finishes, and sees the cabin in 3D as they go, outside and inside. The builder gets an inquiry with a defined cabin, not a loose question about the price per square foot.

Two very different buyers for the same product

A cabin builder usually sells to two kinds of customer, and each needs something different from a quote.

The first is the hospitality entrepreneur: someone with land in the hills, on a lakeshore or near a mountain town who wants to put up four or six rental cabins. They think about how many people sleep in each one, upkeep, how the group of cabins looks together, and how soon they can have them ready for the season.

The second is the family building a home or a weekend place. They think in rooms, in the kitchen, in whether the loft works as a kids' bedroom, how the place is heated and whether they can add on later.

A catalog of six models with photos doesn't really answer either of them. The entrepreneur can't see the whole site; the family can't move a bedroom or make the living room bigger. Both end up asking for changes by message that somebody has to redraw and requote.

What the buyer puts together

A cabin configurator follows the order buyers decide in:

  1. Building system. Full logs, tongue-and-groove boards over a timber frame, or whatever system you build with. Each has its own look and its own rules.
  2. Floor plan. A base model, or a plan built room by room: bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, living area. A 6 × 8 m (about 20 × 26 ft) cabin with two bedrooms and an open living-dining room is a good starting point to change.
  3. Loft or second floor. With stairs, and the system works out what roof height is needed for it to be livable.
  4. Roof. A gable with the steep pitch that gives a cabin its character, overhangs, roofing color.
  5. Porch or deck. In front, on one side or wraparound, with railing.
  6. Windows and finishes. Windows, door, a big front window; exposed wood inside or covered; stain or color.

Every choice shows up right away. What used to be a drawing and a list of options becomes a cabin the buyer can spin around, walk through and send to the family.

Why wood gets chosen by seeing it

In a cabin, the material isn't a detail. It is the product. Buyers want to know what the wood looks like inside, how dark a stain gets, how a room feels with wood on every wall versus a few white ones. A sample chip doesn't settle that.

The prefab home configurator already lets you pick wood, brick or stone cladding inside and out, wood flooring, a gable roof and a second floor with stairs, and walk through the house at eye level. It's the closest thing to try to get a sense of a cabin. I wrote about choosing materials in choosing colors and materials in 3D.

The floor plan editor, applied to a cabin

The prefab home has a floor plan editor: you drag rooms, make them bigger or smaller, add rooms, edit doors and windows and move furniture, with dimensions and undo. In a cabin, that lets a family try "what if the main bedroom goes in the back?" without anybody redrawing a plan. There's more in the floor plan editor for prefab homes.

Your rules set the limits: the longest log or panel you can use, where a support has to go, what span a beam covers, which rooms can't be split. The buyer moves what can move, and the system won't let them design something you can't build. I wrote about that in turning building rules into software.

What a cabin builder gets out of it

  • Inquiries with the cabin already designed. Plan, loft, porch and finishes chosen, plus an image. Your rep starts from there.
  • Fewer rounds of drawings. Changes that used to need a redraw get made by the buyer on screen.
  • Multi-cabin projects. For hospitality buyers, an order can be built with several cabins, identical or not, and the total calculated.
  • Prices that stay current. Lumber costs move; you update your price table and new quotes come out right. I explain that in updating prices with inflation.
  • Sales in other regions or countries. A buyer far away sees the cabin without traveling. If you sell abroad, the configurator can be in their language. There's an example in cabins in the Nordic countries.

What exists and what's built custom

Log cabins aren't one of the three public configurators. The engine generates structures from rules, and a cabin configurator is built custom on top of it, with each builder's models, building system and rules. The prefab home is the closest reference to try today, with Walk mode, night view and a link to share the configuration. The public configurators don't show prices.

I'm Facundo Campo, a software developer in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and email, in English and Spanish. To get started I need your catalog with photos, the plans you build, the rules of your building system and two or three real quotes. With that I build a first version you test from a link.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work for both full-log and timber-frame cabins?

Yes. The configurator is built around the system each builder uses. What changes between logs and framing is the parts, the possible sizes and the look; the way you sell stays the same.

Can the buyer change the floor plan of a model?

It can be built that way, within the limits you set. The prefab home on this site already has a floor plan editor where you drag and resize rooms, which is a good reference.

Can a buyer plan a group of rental cabins?

An order can be built with several units, each with its own setup, and the total calculated with your rules. That's usually what hospitality buyers need.

Does the configurator show prices?

That's your call: a reference price for the public, or prices for sales reps only, as with EQUIBOX. The demo configurators on this site don't show prices.
