Metal Building 3D Configurator for US Manufacturers and Dealers
By Facundo Campo, 3D quoting tool developer
In short: A metal building 3D configurator lets a US steel building manufacturer or dealer have buyers design their building in feet, see it in 3D from every angle and send a quote request with width, length, height, doors and colors already chosen.
A metal building 3D configurator is a web tool where buyers design their steel building —width, length, eave height, roof pitch, walls, doors, lean-to, colors— and see it in 3D as they go, then send a quote request with everything set. In the US, the buyer of a metal building wants to see it before asking for a price. If your website gives them a form that says "tell us what you need," they'll go find a site that lets them build it.
Who's buying a metal building
If you manufacture or sell steel buildings in Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas or across the Midwest, you already know the mix:
- The farmer or rancher who needs a hay barn, an equipment building or a 40 × 60 ft shop with a big door for the tractor.
- The homeowner who wants a detached garage or a 30 × 40 ft workshop in the backyard, or who's thinking about living in one.
- The small business owner who needs a warehouse, a shop for their trucks or a storage building on a commercial lot.
- The church, the school, the county: bigger spans and longer lengths, and committees that need to see it before they vote.
Each one has a different question, but almost all of them start the same way: "What would a 40 × 60 × 14 cost me?" Behind that question there are a dozen choices they haven't made yet: roof style, doors, walk doors, windows, lean-tos, colors.
What buyers expect to see
The US buyer has already played with car builders and kitchen planners. When they land on a metal building site, they expect to:
- Type in width, length and height in feet.
- Pick a gable or single-slope roof and the pitch.
- Place the big door and the walk door where they want them.
- Add a lean-to for the trailer or the hay.
- Choose colors for the frame and the sheeting.
- Turn it around, look inside and share it with their spouse or business partner.
And then ask for a quote. Not before.
What you can try today
The metal building configurator on this site does most of that already, in a realistic rural setting:
- Width (span) from about 20 to 130 ft, length from about 20 to 295 ft, eave height from about 10 to 40 ft, and frame spacing from about 10 to 30 ft.
- Roof pitch from a low slope up to about 4:12.
- Truss, solid-web or curved-roof frames; gable or single-slope roof.
- Open-sided, half-height or fully enclosed walls; block and sheeting, or brick with pilasters.
- A sliding door with width and height that actually opens; walk doors and windows.
- A side canopy (lean-to) with its own width and drop.
- Frame color, sheeting finishes and colors, and concrete, timber or rubber floors.
On top of that: walk-through mode to stand inside at eye level and check the clearance for the RV, night view to see it lit up, layers to see the structure, views, image download, and share, which creates a link that opens that exact building. It works on phones and tablets.
What gets built for your company
The public configurator shows dimensions in meters today; yours would show feet and inches, in your terms. It would follow your catalog: your standard widths, your roll-up door sizes, your wainscot options, your trim colors, your roof styles, whatever you build. Roll-up doors, wainscot and anything else that isn't in the public configurator is built to order. The engine generates the building from rules, so no variation is modeled by hand. I explain that in parametric rendering.
You decide what buyers see. The public configurators on this site don't show prices. In a custom build, prices can show on your website, show only a starting reference, or stay with your sales reps behind a login, as in EQUIBOX, the horse stable manufacturer in Argentina for which I built the full quoting and sales system. Prices live in a table your team manages, so when steel goes up you change one number, not a hundred spreadsheets. See updating prices.
Wind and snow loads, foundations and permits depend on the county and the site; the building needs to be engineered for its location, and buyers should check with a local engineer or building department. The configurator shows the building, it doesn't certify it.
Dealers, leads and follow-up
Many steel building manufacturers sell through dealers. A configurator changes how leads move through that network:
- Leads arrive with the building designed. Instead of a phone number and "need a shop," the dealer gets a link: 40 × 60 × 14, gable roof, two 12 × 12 doors, a walk door, a 12 ft lean-to on the long side, and the roof and wall colors picked from your own color chart.
- Every dealer quotes the same way. The rules are in the tool, not in each dealer's head. See 3D configurator for dealer networks.
- You can sort leads by size, type and location before anyone picks up the phone. See qualified leads with a 3D quoting tool.
Working with me from Argentina
I'm Facundo Campo, a software developer based in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, and I design and build 3D quoting tools and configurators for manufacturers end to end. Argentina is one or two hours ahead of the East Coast and four or five ahead of the West Coast, depending on the season, so we share almost the whole workday.
We work in English, over video calls. You send me your catalog, your standard sizes, photos of finished buildings and a few sample quotes. I send you links to test in any browser, on a computer or phone, and you approve the work step by step. More on that in how I work with manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions
Can the configurator show dimensions in feet?
Yes. The public configurator uses meters today; a custom build for a US company shows feet and inches, with your standard sizes and your product names.
Does it show the price to the buyer?
The public configurators don't. In yours, you decide: a price on the website, a reference price, or prices only for your sales reps and dealers.
Can it include roll-up doors and wainscot?
Yes, as part of the custom build. The public configurator has sliding doors, walk doors, windows, half-height walls and lean-tos; the rest of your catalog is added with your rules.
Does it handle engineering and permits?
No. Loads, foundations and permits depend on the location and should go through a local engineer or building department. The configurator shows the building you sell.
