Modular Home 3D Configurator for Portugal: Sell to Buyers Abroad
By Facundo Campo, 3D quoting tool developer
In short: A modular home 3D configurator lets a Portuguese manufacturer sell to buyers who live in another European country: they design the home in 3D, walk through it and share it by link, in their own language.
A modular home 3D configurator is a web tool where buyers design their home (casa modular or casa de madeira, a timber home, in Portuguese), pick the layout, roof, cladding and terrace, and see it in 3D as they decide. In Portugal it solves a problem most manufacturers elsewhere don't have: a big share of the buyers don't live in the country. They're in London, Paris, Amsterdam or Munich, they've bought a plot in the Alentejo or on the Silver Coast, and they want to decide on their home without flying in every time.
Who buys a modular home in Portugal
If you run a modular or timber home company in Portugal, you already know the two types of buyer.
The first is the local buyer: a family in Braga, Leiria or Coimbra that wants a home finished faster than a traditional build, or an owner adding a unit to rent out to tourists on their own land.
The second is the buyer living abroad: a British retiree settling in the Algarve, a French couple who bought a ruin with land in the interior, a Portuguese emigrant in Switzerland who wants to build in their parents' village, a German looking for a holiday home near the coast. That buyer decides from another country, speaks another language and can't drop by your factory on a Saturday morning.
For that second buyer, a PDF catalog and photos of finished homes aren't enough. They need to see their home, with their rooms, and be able to show it to their partner or their architect in Portugal.
What a 3D configurator gets you
A 3D configurator changes a long-distance sale in a few concrete ways:
- The buyer shows up with the home already designed. Instead of an email saying "I'd like a T2 with a terrace," you get a link that opens the exact configuration they chose: two bedrooms, gable roof, timber cladding, a porch facing south.
- Layouts become visual. In Portugal homes are described as T1, T2, T3 by number of bedrooms. A foreign buyer doesn't always know that system; seeing it in 3D, they get it without an explanation.
- Questions get answered before the call. "Does an open kitchen fit with the living room?" "How does the terrace look next to the pool?" They try it themselves.
- Your sales team stops walking people through the catalog in four languages. The tool shows the same thing in Portuguese, English, French or German, if it's built that way.
I wrote more about this in qualified leads with a 3D quoting tool, and about the channel buyers tend to prefer in WhatsApp and 3D quoting.
The plot, the sun and the terrace sell the home
In Portugal, a modular home sells as much on how you live outside as on the house itself. A wide porch, a pool, a fence around the plot and which way the big windows face weigh as much in the decision as the floor area.
The prefab home configurator you can try on this site already shows all of that: the home on a neighborhood lot with sidewalk and street, porch, pool, fence (solid wall, wire mesh or railings), flat roof, single-slope or gable roof, render with an accent color, and exterior cladding in brick, stone or timber. With night view, the buyer sees the home lit up at dusk, which is exactly the picture they have in mind from an apartment in a northern European city.
And with walk-through mode they move around inside at eye level: in through the front door, across the living room, a look into the bedroom. For someone who won't set foot on site until the home is finished, that's worth more than any floor plan.
Editing the floor plan without asking anyone for a drawing
Portuguese modular homes are usually sold as models with variations: the same T2 with an extra bathroom, an open kitchen, a larger bedroom. Today each variation means a request to the designer.
The floor plan editor in the prefab home configurator lets you drag rooms, make them bigger or smaller, add rooms, edit doors, windows and the entrance, move furniture and add an upper floor with stairs. It shows dimensions and has undo. In your company's tool, those rules would be yours: the modules you build, the sizes that can be transported, the limits of each building system. I explain the idea in turning building rules into software.
Anything to do with building permits or what can be built on a given plot depends on the municipality and the land; that's for a local professional, not the configurator.
The buyer's language, currency and units
The site and the configurators already run in Spanish and English. For a Portuguese manufacturer, a custom tool can run in Portuguese and in your buyers' languages (English, French, German), in euros and meters. That's part of the custom build: we decide early on which languages you need and who checks the technical wording in each one.
Prices can show on the website or only when a sales rep is logged in. The public configurators on this site don't show prices; in a custom build, you decide. That's how it works for EQUIBOX, the horse stable manufacturer in Berazategui, Argentina, for which I built the full system: buyers design in 3D, and prices only appear for the sales team.
Working with a developer in Argentina
I'm Facundo Campo, a software developer based in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, and I work remotely. Portugal is three or four hours ahead of Argentina depending on the time of year, so your afternoon is my morning: there are several shared working hours every day for video calls.
We work in English or Spanish, and this is how it starts:
- You send me your catalog, photos of finished homes, floor plans of your models and a few sample quotes.
- We go over on a video call which variations you sell and which you don't.
- I send you a link to try in the browser, on a computer or a phone, and you approve it step by step.
The full process is in how I work with manufacturers and the service in custom 3D quoting software.
Try it before you write
Open the prefab home configurator, design a T2 with a porch and a pool, walk through it and share the link with someone on your team. If you'd then like to see how your own models would look, message me on WhatsApp at +54 9 11 6193-3176 or email facundocampo100@gmail.com. I answer in English and Spanish.
Frequently asked questions
Can the configurator run in Portuguese and other languages at the same time?
Yes, it can be built that way. The site and public configurators already run in Spanish and English; for a Portuguese manufacturer we add Portuguese and your buyers' languages, with euros and meters.
Does it work for a buyer who'll never visit the factory?
That's who it's for. They design the home, walk through it, see it at night and share the link with family or their architect. When they get in touch, you already know which model and options they want.
Does the configurator handle building permits?
No. What can be built on each plot depends on the municipality and local rules, and that needs a professional in Portugal. The configurator shows the product you sell.
Can I try a configurator before ordering mine?
Yes. The prefab home configurator is free and public, works on phones, and includes the floor plan editor, walk-through mode and night view.
